Red Crowned Crane
Captive
EOS30, Sigma 100-300 F4, Provia 100F, Handheld,

Following on from my previous post, the chicks are now hatched and on this, their first day out of the egg, the parents take a very close interest in their new offspring.

Here the mother is digging for food in the grass surrounding the nest and busily feeding her chicks with each tasty morsel.

All comments and critiques always welcome and appreciated and thanks for looking.

Carol,

This is wonderful. You must have been close, using a 300. Were you in a blind?

I would be tempted to crop down just a bit to remove the light brown area in the background, although that cuts off some of the neck, Either way its awesome.

Excellent composition, and major "Awwww" factor. The image looks oddly grainy and somewhat soft on my monitor, I'm thinking it's the scan?

Carol,

Nice work. I like how you have the parent coming diagonally out of the top corner of the frame.

Lovely and intimate, Carol. I like the composition. The whites are boiling. Fill might have provided some catchlights.

Carol,
Who would ever think that those little brown fuzzballs would grow up to be such a beautiful creature? The intimate relationship between parent and chick is shown wonderfully here.

Super cute and great composition. A third stop less exposure would keep more detail in the whites.

Awesome image and interaction. Like Sandy, I would wish for just a bit of fill flash.

This is a great shot despite the toasty head. What a wonderful oppotunity. I hope that you get more. Next time you might try less EV and fill flash as was suggested. This does deserve an "Aw.....it's so cute!"
