Title: AMERICAN COOT - RAIN JEWELS
Species: American Coot (Fulica americana)
Photographer: James McIntyre
Location: Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge, CA
Date: December, 2001
Equipment: Canon EOS-1VHS; EF 100-400 mm f/4-5.6L IS USM, handheld
Film: Fuji Provia 100F
Exposure Mode: Aperture Priority
Metering: Evaluative, +1/3
Scanner: Nikon LS-2000 with LaserSoft Silverfast Ai v4.0 software (IT8 calibrated)

Coots are perhaps the most frequently seen but least commonly watched of all North American waterfowl. Most birdwatchers tend to ignore them or regard them as a viewing distraction. Yet this humble marshland resident, when bedecked with backlit raindrop jewels, takes on a regal beauty all its own. It is a Cinderella of the bird world.

James, this is very nice. Love the setting, the low angle and the bird looks awesome.

Well, I'm not sure about "Cinderalla" but I do like the shot. Raindrops and green background certainly makes this coot shot stand out. Would like a bit more detail in the black in the neck, but still very nicely done.

James:

Nice combination of dark bird against a OOF green, Tough exposure to get details on the blacks and whites. I have resorted to only shot coots very very early in the morning.
