My mandarin male pales when compared to E.J.'s post (but whose don't?) and I probably lost feature in the whites but I'm posting anyway. Hopefully this is not the last time around for this fella but E.J.s comments give me concern.
Canon 10D, Canon 400/2.8 + 1.4 TC on Gitzo tripod and WImberly head. ISO at 200; 1/250 @ f 4. Flash off.
Any advice, reposts welcome. Hopefully soon I'll be able to do a better job on some of these marginal white blowouts.

What a beauty -- whites are a bit hot.

A beautiful duck for sure. I think going to a flash as mainlight shot and stopping down a bit to get more DOF would have helped. Alternately, ISO 400 would have allowed you to stop down a bit too.

Gorgeous little fellow. Very nice shot even with the hot whites.

Joseph the bird looks good. Not crazy about the light gray water next to the beautiful green and gold water.

Another beauty in a very nice image. It shows me what I'm missing in not ever seeing one of these.

Very nice. I agree that a little more DOF would improve this. :D

Maybe you can rescue with the new "Highlight/shadow recovery" in PS CS.

You can never have enough Mandarin shots. Shooting suggestions made were good and I also think you might be able to try some things with PS. Still a good shot of a Mandarin.....something I didn't accomplish at Duckshop last year.

Love those Mandarins. What do you think caused the grey reflection in the water?

Its caused by the building on the other side. This was taken in the morning when it was cloudy so the wonderful golden reflection we got in the afternoon is a drab gray reflection in the AM.

Very nice shot. I wish for a little more detail in the whites and a litlle more DOF.
