Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias)
Venice Rookery on 12 Jan 2004

On my recent trip with Alex to the Venice, St. Pete Beach, and Dunedin areas of Florida’s west coast, I resolved to get “bird parts” rather than complete images as much as I could. Venice Rookery may be the best place in Florida for flight shots of egrets and herons. This big guy was flying back and forth in a predictable fashion. When he grabbed hold of the large branch and took off, I fired.

I’m pleased to return to NSN after a month’s hiatus. A brief hospitalization, visits by my children and grand-kids, working furiously on my upcoming website, and taking the one week trip noted above all conspired to keep me away.

Thanks for looking. Comments, critiques, and reposts are welcome.

Nice one Sandy, the branch looks bigger than I have seen them handle around here.

Welcome back Sandy. You were missed.
This is a terrific image. The perspective makes it look like he is carrying an entire tree :)
Very nice.

Sandy, a beautiful image. Glad your back. Missed your comments. The details in the face of this bird are the best I've seen of the gbh. They seem to have the ability to look soft on most occassions even if you get everything right. This is not the case in this picture.

Good to see you posting again Sandy, and my sort of shot - up close and personal and doing strange things!! :)

Amazing image of this house removal! 8) :)

Hope you had a good trip with the Wandering Hobo  and I look forward to more of your wonderful handiwork, which as well as being a joy to behold, teaches me so much. :)

Sandy,

This is a nicely composed image. Amazing how not one twig is blocking any part of the heron. Just the way you planned it.

Welcome back.

Nice lumber and beautiful blue lore. I like the way the plume echoes the shapes of the branches. Surprised you didn't use high-speed flash, but wonderful as is.
