An image taken Sunday from Don Schoenfelds yacht the Xanadu. We were nosed into the beach along the intercoastal waterway north of Rockport Tx where the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge begins. There were 4 whooping cranes at this spot, two adults and two chicks. For a pair to have two chicks make the migration is very unusual. All were oblivious to the photographers and the boat. I liked this shot showing the adult and chick interacting. I could almost here the adult saying to the chick, "Now this is how you catch a crab".

Great capture! I really like the interaction and the lack of big bulky radio transmitters. The natural habitat and water in the FG add alot IMO. The Whoopers here in FL almost always have the brightly colored large transmitters strapped to their legs, even the chicks/juveniles.

David:

Great photo, it shows the different plumage between the adults and the juvenile. After reading the history of the recovery of the cranes from a almost sure extinction, I feel lucky of enjoying seen and photographing these majestic animals.

I have been in many Whooping tours before, but sometimes we can not even see them, or the weather is foggy or the boats do not turn the engines off so there is al ot of vibration. Not a good experience like the one on Sunday.

We need to do it again with more fellow NSN's.
