A group of us got a trip together to visit the Aransas Wildlife Refuge by boat last Sunday to photograph Whooping Cranes. We were lucky to find this family when we first arrived. It was also the pair (they mate for life) that fostered a first time occurrence of having two chicks make the migration down here. The chicks are about as big as their parents but have a brown cast. This adult (sex unknown) was preening and gave us peek at the black underside of the wing tips.
We watched for several hours as they devoured large crabs as shown by the picture Juan posted earlier. I don’t know how they can hold so much. It was difficult to photograph them getting a crab since they would head away from us after they got one to the opposite bank to pound it on the bank.

Hey Don, I went ahead and resized your photo per the submission guidelines of 650 pixels on the longest side.

This is a wonderful shot of this incredible Crane. I love the preening. I might crop a little off the bottom to just below the birds shadow.

Don,
Another wonderful view of these guys, Your description really helps since I was complete thrown off by the shine from what must be the fill flash reflecting from the black wing tips.
I love the head and neck angle on this pose.

Very nice Don, I still think that you added plastic wing tips. Ha Ha, just poking fun.

Don, I love these feathers and stretched neck!! The sheen of the wing tips was disconcerting at first. A lovely shot of a fabulous bird!! :D 8)

Very, very nice! Scrolling up and down I found I also like this with a smidgen cropped from the top and bottom. What a great bird.
