A group of us got a trip together to visit the Aransas Wildlife Refuge by boat last Sunday to photograph Whooping Cranes. We were lucky to find this family when we first arrived. It was also the pair (they mate for life) that fostered a first time occurrence of having two chicks make the migration down here. The chicks are about as big as their parents but have a brown cast. This adult (sex unknown) was preening and gave us peek at the black underside of the wing tips. We watched for several hours as they devoured large crabs as shown by the picture Juan posted earlier. I don’t know how they can hold so much. It was difficult to photograph them getting a crab since they would head away from us after they got one to the opposite bank to pound it on the bank.
