Black Skimmer (Rynchops niger)

The skimmers and I finally met on a personal level, Just a a few minutes after sunrise and the flock was sleeping and resting on the muddy shore, It is also very hard to isolate individuals since they like to roost close to each other, Needless to say it was a good time well spent, Sandy and I spent a day and a half fondling these birds!!
At this time of day the exposure range is pretty wide between the B&W's, My new SB-800 Nikon Flash made short work out this difficult situation, After exposing for the high-lites and properly compensating in camera, the flash did it's magic at EV=0 in Balance fill-flash D-TTL, No BB and no compensation ever, what a delight to be able to ignore my flash setting, Finally a flash that works on digital as they did on the F5, Thanks Nikon!!
D1x, Raw, Lens=400mm afs-f/2.8 + 1.4X, Incident metering, 1/500sec-f/8, EV-0.3, ISO-200, Auto WB, Flash D-TTL-EV=0
Any comments and or reposts are always welcome!!

I haven't actually tried EV 0 with the flash. Interesting. I may have to do out and practice some before going to Alaska in a few weeks.

Excellent shot. I haven't seen a skimmer since I visited Cape May a few months ago. Now you're making me want to drive down there again. :D

An excellent Skimmer shot. I can see that she has her eye on the fondler...oops.....mean photographer. Gorgeous light, color, and detail. That flash must be something else. So glad that we will soon be seeing more of "The Excellent Adventures of Alex and Sandy". Truly a marvelous first post from your escapades.

A real beauty -- so what is EV 0 ?? I don't understand what you mean by exposing for the highlights and not using BB or flash compensation. Thanx for any explanation.

Brian, I am not an expert at this but it goes something like this:
By means of incident metering (need a light meter like Sekonic) you look for the proper exposure at the particular shutter speed/aperture/ISO combination, compensate for the whites on the bird in camera by -2/3 or -1 EV, Flash in D-TTL with no compensation at all, the flash will balance your selected exposure correctly taking into consideration the selected exposure; It only works like this with my new flash Model SB-800, No other previous Nikon flash gave me this perfect exposure before; I am self taught, but I could have saved a lot of time on trials and errors by taking some field lessons with Chas , Greg or EJ!!
Hope this helps!!
