This was taken last weekend at Barnegat Light on Sunday morning. There was a small flock of Harlequins on a rock. This one fellow was preening with just enough room around him to allow me to isolate him. Is this cropped too tight?
EOS 1Ds, 500mm, 1.4XTC, Shutter speed: 1/500 sec, Aperture: 11.0, Exposure mode: Manual, Flash: External E-TTL High speed sync
Flash exposure compensation: -1 2/3 with BB.
In PS, cropped, levels, curves and USM.

Another one where it doesn't get anybetter than that. Wonderful preening action.....and with the eye open......great job!

I think you maximized the available DOF at the given aperture.

These guys really are contortionists. Not too tight for me, since the head is not tight agains the edge.

Well Done!

You know I'm a big fan of preening birds. This isn't too tight for me.

Sweet shot!!

Excellent angle of approach on this, accentuates the curves of sides & head. You have reproduced the softness of the feathers very well.

Wil,

Nice shot. Having the eye clearly in view as you do here makes this an excellent image.

I can't believe this shot -- this was the one shot I visualized prior to going to Barnegat but did not get. I am glad someone did, nice work.
