Stilt Sandpiper Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, Queens, NY

We were lucky enough to get close to a group of tame stilt sandpipers last weekend at JB... I had never even seen one so I was happy to get a few shots! I hope that you like it!

I really want a photo of one of these....I worked for hours in the mud in Churchill trying to get a shot, creeping closer, etc. Some godwits chased them off and the sandpipers ended up right in front of Greg. Snap snap, he got them, not me.

You are so lucky, congrats on getting an image. If I find out there are any still there I'm getting in a car and driving immediately.... :)

By the way, I like the photo.

Great bird. The background color is unusual but works well for this image. Very nice one!

Nice shot Matthew. Stilts are hard to get with their legs showing as they seem to always wade up to their bellies in the water.

Lovely shot, Matthew. I particularly like the BG colors. I'm ambivalent about the reflection, though, because I do not think it strengthens the image.

Matthew,

This is a great pose and a very nice photograph. I really like the low angle.

Nice colors and catch on the feather ruffling. Seems a bit soft but the overall tone is not objectionable at all.

Matthew,

I like the colors around the bird, and the detail of the fluffed-up feathers is great! Well done!

I like the fluffed appearance, and I like the reflection (wouldn't it be cool if it was sharp... <sigh>). For me the BG blobs (birds?) are distracting and could be cropped out wihtout losing anything.

A lifer and a cool shot in a setting, you must be blessed!
A shorebird image as good as they come. The fluffy feathers add life.

Hi Matthew, I like everything about this one.
To Heather, There are LOTS of juvenile stilts (like this one) molting into first winter plumage.

Matthew, this is very nice and the colors and contrast are quite good. I might have preferred this more if the reflections above the bird weren't there but they do frame the bird nicely so I would take the image either way.
