On a recent trip to Cayman Brac, we took a day away from diving to check out the bird life on the island. These little guys were ubiquitous but a bit camera-shy. Here's my favorite shot, though I wish the shadow across its back wasn't there. I know it's a bit centered but if I crop out the foliage on the right it looks unbalanced.

Canon 10D on ISO 200, 100-400 IS lens, hand held. f/8 at 1/500s, exposure comp -2/3 from eval. metering.

Oh, wow! I like the lines shaped like a "V" of the branches and the bird between two outcroppings of leaves. What a gorgeous bird, and sharp, too - well done!

Hi Lillian and welcome!
What a neat bird. Your exposure looks dead on. I personally like the balance with a little off the right but I like it either way. Nice!

Lillian,
This is very nice. YOu got closer than I was able and got better detail. I guess I should have left the bar and followed your example and taken more photos. I think the shadow on the back might be much improved with some dodging in PS. Try it and see.

A beautiful shot, Lillian. You've framed it well. My only tiny nit is the shadow.

Lilian,

This is very nice. I love all the detail you captured on the back of the bird. Just a little more head turn back towards you would make it even better.

Nice image Lillian. Hope you had some great diving down there. I like the composition between the two plants - I think they balance the image nicely. I do have an issue with the shadow though - it really doesn't contribute anything to the shot other than being a distraction.

Lillian,

This is a very nice shot of a Bananquit indeed. These guys usually seem to flit around quite a bit in my experience, so capturing him is definitely not an easy task. The detail is excellent and the catchlight in the eye is nice as well. Personally, I like the crop as it is, keeping the leaves on the upper right hand corner as they help frame the bird in its surroundings. Well done indeed.

Yes, the shadow is a little distracting, but overall this is a nice image. A touch of fill flash may have helped.

Love the light, sharp as can be and the comp is excellent. Shadow stays for me, so many sterile shots of birds these days. This refreshes.

This is what I call "bird between leaves" and I like it a lot. The only nit I have is the shadow riding across its back which you already know about and I don't mind that much. If you really don't think this is good enough for you, you can give it to me, I'll keep it.
