Willet
Fort DeSoto, Florida

I can’t recall what the term is for the “flexing bill”, but the bird’s bill is normal in the frames just before and just after this shot.

Digital capture with Nikon D1
Sigma 300mm f/2.8 with 1.4x teleconverter
ISO 200
Groundpod

Heather,

This is the remarkable type of shot I hope to get this Sunday when I am at Fort DeSoto. There are, from all posts i've been reading lately, hundreds of dowitchers in all forms of plumage there, as well as Red Knots, several different plovers etc. The Heerman's Gull also recently showed up. I plan to be there before dawn :)

Great shot!

A fine shot, Heather, with excellent exposure. I don't know what the bill action is called either, but I've seen it in several photos. Perhaps there's some aliasing on the lower edge of the upper bill - I'm not sure.

Heather,
As for the upturned bill. This is a behavior by the males called "puckering". They do this when female photographers come near them. :D

Its a great photo Heather,

Alan

This is one of my favorites of yours! Well done! (there appears to be some small sharpening halos around the bill, but they are minor). Colors are perfect as usual!

Heather

I think he was talking to you. Probably saying "Post me, post me!!!" Great shot. Shorebirds are a lot of fun.....as long as there's not too much mud.

What a great image Heather! I think I would have liked a tad more room on the right, but I always like some space :)

Great shot, Heather. The behavior is called rhynchokinesis, or sometimes rhinokinesis.

Good luck on the success of the site. Don't know how much time I'll have to participate, but I'll visit when I can.

Cool shot Heather. I don't think that I have ever seen a shot of the bill like this. I knew that the end was flexible for grabbing prey under the sand, but I never have seen it in action. Cool.

Oh, what a sweet expression, Heather. Amazing how if we are prepared and shooting we can sometimes get something unusual like this. :)
