Eared Grebe

This little guy has only one leg and had just been released to the wild at Port Aransas Texas Birding Center. He had been raised by the rescue folks at the University of Texas Oceanographic Center.

He was given the advice to avoid the alligator. :D

Hopefully even with only one leg he can outmaneuver that big gator!

This is a really beatiful bird, what a great chance to photograph it! The water is maybe a little too "high key" (using a new monitor, sorry if I'm off base). Also, there seems to be a bit of noise, not sure if that's from ISO 400 on the 10D, PS adjustments, etc. Maybe a few tricks in PS could help. But the image looks like it's sharp and your composition is good here. And that bird's eye is just incredible!

Maybe you can help me, what were those big "muscrat" looking things at the birding center called again?

Water seems high key/overexposed as well to me, and there is quite a bit of grain. The image itself however looks very sharp to me, especially in the area of the eye and plumage around the head. You could probably remove some of the grain with some selective gaussian blurs.

Nice shot of the Grebe, Jim. The high key BG might have been avoided by dialing down the ambient exposure by about 2 EV and using flash as main light. On the 10D at ISO 400 the grain should be very mild. The 10D is so very tolerant of higher ISOs. I cannot explain this grain unless it results from a sizable crop.

Sandy,

I forgot to mention that this is a sizable crop. Not sure flash would have reached to work as primary.

This guy hooked it out of close range quickly after he was released.

Jim,

That eye really pops out at you! Nicely composed!

I agree with Sandy and I see that that was confirmed. The amount of shadow noise in the image is distracting. The pose and combosition is something to strive for in another image that you don't need to crop as much.
