This is another image I took at Fort DeSoto, this time on Thursday morning Aug 28. I ran into Jim Urbach there that morning and it was a fabulous time to be photographing birds. Dowitchers galore, 5 Black-bellied Plovers, and a Long-billed Curlew amongst the star performers. The light was wonderful, and this is one of maybe 100 decent dowitcher shots I have. The curlew series will come soon, with crabs included!

Enjoy,

Chris, I like it! The colors of the bird and the slight waves in the water are neat.

I apologize, in the short time you were gone we changed the posting limit in the Birds gallery to once every 48 hours. Please keep this one up though, just apply the change for future posts. (My fault for taking the annoucement down already, sorry.)

Ooops :( Sorry Heather. Guess I was over-anxious about posting stuff from Florida :) I'll keep it to once every 2 days now.

Chris,

This is very nice. The colors look good and I like where you placed him in the frame. I'm not sure it was possible, but a lower angle might make it even better.

Any lower and my camera would be in the water :) I had my tripod pretty darn low and mostly submerged in the bay.

Very nice! I especially like how the 3 ripples in the water run through the image. If I could want for anything more here it would be to have the bird's head and body more parallel to you.

Nice color, feather detail and diagonal lines in the water. I would like to see the bird's head more on a parallel with the film plane but otoh, with the diagonal lines there, the position of the bird seems to fit well and I like that view, too. As always, the intended use of the photo and individual preference will be the determining factors. :)

Chris, I know this is technically excellent work. However, something just doesn't sit right with me for this image. The problem is I can't quite pin down what it is.

It might be the way the lines of the waves play along the image.
It might be the way the reflection isn't that good but it takes up a major amount of space in the image.
Or it might be the way the right part of the image isn't contributing that much.

I would have personally tried to get lower and closer but I know that doesn't always work either. And given this image I would crop from the bottom and from the right to see if I liked the image better.

Still this is better than any Dowitcher that I have so take the comments as late night ranting if you'd like.
Tony
