Tufted Puffin, St. Paul Island, AK

This is likely my favorite Tufted portrait from this year’s trip to the island.

This was taken in total shade. I carefully adjusted the ambient to give me the background I wanted, while using flash as the main source of light for the bird. Digital is much more sensitive to flash than film and even at -1 I got adequate light on the bird.

EOS 10D, EF 600/4L IS, 1.4tc, manual exposure, 1/200 @ F13, ISO 400, FF @ -1, full frame.

Not a big fan of head shots, but this is stellar! The detail in the whites as well as blacks is just incredible. The slight turn of the head adds quite a bit to this, too.

Greg,

Only one word is needed to describe this one: WOW!

The detail you got in the whites in the face and the ends of the tufts is just awesome. I only hope to achieve this sort of perfection some day.

Greg,

Beautiful detail in the white and black feathers. I love the pose, and the background color is great.

Excellent shot as usual, Greg!
I just wonder what it would have been like if fill was @ -1 2/3 ... Would you still retain some visible details in the black as is?

This is really the most perfect image I can remember seeing. The subtle turn of the head is perfect as is everything else about this image.

Oh yes, I'm still drooling over this from the last time I saw it. No one does head shots better than you Greg. This photo is a clinic in exposure. Getting the detail in the whites and blacks is outstanding here.

Total shade? Yowzah. Perfect. Does eye color change with age of the bird?

There is great character in this shot - a real "personality" really comes across in the subject, which is great.
