Common tern bringing in a fish. I shot this a couple of weeks ago at our local tern colony. Sometimes these guys will fly around for 20 minutes or more showing off their catch. This one flew in right over me.

By this time most of the terns in the colony were starting to molt out of their breeding plumage, as seen on this birds head.

Fish, turned head, and wing position are all great!

Watching the terns fly around with their catch, I wondered if they were locating their young, who by late in the season may have moved from the nest? I've watched them fly close to their young with a fish and then just stand there, parent and chick a few inches apart, chick sometimes calling and the parent just standing (with its mouth full). I've wondered about the behavior. Looked like the parent wanted the chick to do something to "earn" its meal - and neither the chick nor I had a clue about what was desired.

Great catch! The wing position, fish in mouth, and head turn with the glimmer in the eye all put this one over the top.

Paul,

This is outstanding. As fast as these guys can fly, I'd say you did a great job framing this shot. The head turn and the fish make this special.

A tern in flight with a fish is not an easy thing, but with a catchlight!?! Nice job.
