Canon 1D 400 5.6 Lens handheld f7.1 at 1/1000 ISO 200 Cropped ~20% Manual Incident -1/3

The lonely male Hooded Merganser at the Papago Park Lagoon in Phoenix, finally accepted me and after few hours began to follow the ring-necked ducks and mallards for the cracked corn I was offering. I was able to get headshots with the crest up. Proper exposure was a challenge.
Thanks again EJ Peiker for the tip in finding this rare specimen.

Juan,

WOW, You must wear the correct deodorant for him to come this close. A most impressive portrait.

I have since found his morning and afternoon hangout - they are different and he is getting tamer with time. This is an excellent shot. Glad that cracked corn came in handy ;)

That is definitely a WOW!!! I am surprised to hear about the corn. I have been putting out corn for about ten years in the spring for mallards and woodies but the hoodies never come near it.

You did an excellent job with this guy as the exposure can be a nightmare....not to mention just getting one that close. Very nice.

Fantastic shot. I find exposure very difficult with these guys.

Wonderful color and detail, and I'd be very happy to have this as is. But if shooting this, I think I'd opt for the lens on a Wimberly at 1/500 and a correspondingly smaller aperture for more DOF on the near flank.

   Absolutely wonderful! I don't think I've ever seen one this close; they are incredibly wary around here. Great work!

cheers, Oliver
