I shot this happy America wigeon drake last evening over my back fence. That was before the 40+ wood ducks flew in and distracted me. They began to fly up into my yard after sunset with me sitting there, scurrying all around behind me. After it was completely dark I could hear them flying in and out of my yard with a rush of massed wing beats. Wood ducks are quite active at night. Amazing to see and hear.
I have always had a hard time getting the eye to show on the AW drakes. Any suggestions? Nikon D2h, 500 F4 AF-S, 1/125th @ f7.1, SB-800 at -1 1/3 EV as fill flash.

This image looks to be linked properly but doesn't show up which makes me think that your provider blocks cross linking.

Great bill action. I just love to listen to the squeaky sounds that these drakes make. I can hear it now. 8)

Great that you fixed the link. I like the open bill a lot and wish for a lower shooting angle

An extremely cute little duck and I love that you've captured him with an open bill. A slightly lower angle might be nice but then again, I can't imagine shooting this from my backyard! I always find it hard to get the eye to show on these guys too. I've had my best luck doing so in good light when the head is turned slightly toward the camera.
