(?) Rail

I know for a fact that it is a rail, no idea if it is a Virginia or a King Rail, The size being smaller than a Moorehen indicates she might be a Virginia, then again she might be a juvenile, on the other hand the habitat (Shark Valley) indicates she might be a King Rail and a juvenile at that as well , a Clapper she is not according to Sibley, So here is my predicament!!! A Rail with no first name!!!
Sandy and I walked almost a 1/4 mile in SV after this wondering morsel, from the back of the Canal all around the parking lot of the trams and all they way up to the Ranger Booth at the entrance to SV, At times she was just two feet from me and I snapped almost 100 images on a light drizzle and overcast skies, many when she was in the open and I may post those later on, I did learn a couple of things, she feeds on the wet edges and avoids the thick undergrowth in case she needs to flee, she comes out in the open and circumvents those spots , as soon as the marsh open up a bit she goes back in to feed, the other thing is to wear comfortable shoes, when you are following one of these globe trotters, she walks like there is no tomorrow!!!
I just wanted to show her feeding in her habitat, up close and personal!!

It could be a rail but certainly not a snail. Whatever she is...she shines from head to tail.

I wonder if I could be deemed a poet laureate? Excellent capture!

Alex,

I compared your subject against my Smithsonian Eastern Birds handbook, and it most closely matches a Clapper, especially due to the flashed white tail coverlets. Great shot!

Alex, looks like a King to me. Virginia Rails are smaller. One way to sort out between the King and Clapper is, one is found in salt marsh and one in fresh. I forget which is which.

This is a great photo. Love the tonal range you got here. The slight head turn makes this.

Alan, From what I hear the King is a fresh water marsh bird, the Clapper inhabits salt water marshes, size is another parameter, and this guy/gal was small!!

Hi Alex

This is a great shot of one of the hard to find birds of South Florida. This looks like a King Rail, notice the tawny edges of the cover feathers and the overall rusty look. Clapper Rails are more greyish in overall color and a noticeable gray cheeks. Can't believe how close you came to this individual. Great shot! :D

It's not just another excellent shot....it's another excellent shot of a bird that most of us never get to see. And.....one that ran you and Sandy up and down the canal......pretty smart bird to get both of you.

We really had to work/walk for her attention , one time she stopped to preen, she was so close that I could have touched her when she was not looking, But I never touch wild birds/animals out of respect and any possible chance of passing a bacteria/virus to them, Cold viruses and or influenza is deadly for my feathered friends!!!

Cannot help you. But, what a fantastic shot. I'd say it's impossible to get close enough to shoot a rail with a 70-200. We can't even get within 400mm +1.4x in Ontario.

Alex, Who's the troublemaker now? Definitely a rail ... I'm calling her a Queen Rail for the moment and have sought assistance from a Master Birder. I love the image amid the SV habitat, and commend both you and Sandy for extreme perseverance under adverse conditions!!! Great capture, MA. 8) :D 8)

Alex -

Looks like a king rail to me. I second what Wildstock says about the differences between king and clapper. BTW, kings are freshwater species and clappers are salt or brackish marsh inhabitants.

Nice shot, and glad to hear you didn't sneeze on it! :D

Great catch Alex - any closer and you may have stepped on her!! - It certainly isn't a British Rail - they just have trains

P.S. Thanks for your hard work on my little Robin - he really glows now!!

Alex,

I can't help with the ID as I've seen neither before, but this is wonderful. Love the DOF and habitat. This sounds like the way to spend a drizzly day in SV.

All the best, Jim
