Mandarin Duck (Maybe)
EOS300D, 500F4L IS, 1.4xTCII, iso 200, f5.6, 1/160, EV-2/3, 550EX -2/3, full frame

There are two of these on the duck pond in our wildlife park. I'm fairly sure it's a mandie, but not sure of the sex. The beak says male, but the wings say female. They are both followed around by a couple of (normal coloured) males as well.

Perhaps there is a white morph of this species ? I don't think it's an albino.

Any thoughts or comments appreciated.

EDIT : I should have said, she's standing on the ice of the frozen pond

Beautiful shot and bird. A little catchight would, IMO take this over the top.

Never seen a white morph mandy but this is a beauty. A real keeper.

Cool shot--I particularly like the droplets on its belly.

I'm no bird expert, but I've certainly heard of Leucistic variations happening in many different bird species--these are not albinos, but white or very light variations.

The only leucistic birds I've ever personally seen were magpies, but I've read about and/or seen pictures of enough different species...

Very nice! Certainly has the Mandarin look to it. Definitely not an albino as it doesn't have pink eyes. Probably a white morph as you suspect. Cool bird!

You have a gorgeous shot of a very interesting duck. Definitely not an albino so I'm thinking a leucistic variation as Paul suggested. Let us know if you find out anything.....it is certainly unique.

You might want to ask whoever cares for these animals at your wildlife park what the origin of this is. I think its part Mandarin and part something else. Very nice shot for sure.

Really nice exposure on the whites. I like the droplets on the underside. I see a catchlight but it is not a bright one. Easily fixed if you wanted to.

She certainly is a little beauty Dave and you have captured her to perfection. Much better than my shots of her!! Perfect exposure on the whites (and she has a lot of those!!) 8)

Dave,

Very nice shot. I like the standing pose with the slight head turn toward you. The water drops on the belly are a nice addition to the image. Excellent work with the exposure.

Dave,

I'm glad you did not post this as an ID question. I would have been in the wrong ballpark. Neat looking variant.
