Though I am using the Landscape and mankind to trace our December drive to Utah and Bosque, I really did not shoot any bird shots except at Bosque. The trip was spectacular and Bosque never disappoints. I used this trip to try to get different images than I had before. I succeeded in some shots. Though as a child, many years ago,, I had captured a kestrel and tried to train it, I did not have a kestrel photo. That time was when I was in high school and we caugtht the "Sparrow hawk" in Los Angeles where they were thriving in the 50's.
This one was at the limit of acceptable distance and I only was able to rest the lens on the window since I did not bring a window pod of beanbag this trip. My fault.
The shot is not as sharp as I would have liked, but sharpened up fine for posting, I have shots of the kestrel looking right and left, my first post is looking to the right. The next might be the over the shoulder, unless I chose another one for some reason. Cropped for composition about 40%

Way to go Steve, you really got him. The over the shoulder look on this male makes this image for me.

I'd take this one in a heart beat. I got skunked on Kestrel shots at Bosque...you did a good job!

Great bird, wonderful light, nice composition (though I'd go further and put the eye on or left of vertical center). Bosque is the best place I've ever been for photographing kestrels. Like Richard, I see artifacts, but they could easily be eliminated and the eye, already sharp, sharpened more. I've never gotten a sharp-looking JPEG from an unsharp slide, so I think you did very well off the window.

Really nice. These were high on my hit list at Bosque this year but I didn't do very well. I agree with Cliff's comp suggestions.

Steve -

Nice light and pose on this guy. I also see a slight sharpening halo.

Nice shot!

What a beautiful shot Steve, these are such gorgeous birds and that over the shoulder look is wonderful.

Excellent. You might want to crop it so that it's a little more to the left in the frame. :)
