Howdy all. Another shot from my Brazil trip of a pretty familiar subject during my time in the Pantanal. This was one of several Amazon Kingfishers who hung around right outside my door pretty much (The pixiam river was maybe 50 feet away). He pretty much refused to perch on anything except the piece of wood he is on, so you take what you can get. This was taken a few seconds after he had made an unsuccessful dive attempting to catch a fish. I was happy to catch him still fluffed up a bit with some water droplets on his feathers. A few dives later he caught his prize!

Canon Eos10D + 400mm f/5.6L @ f/16.0. 1/200th sec, -1 2/3EV. Fill used to get a catchlight (it was bright, but overcast if I recall right)

Nicely done, the detail in the black feathers is great. IMO, this would benefit from a CW rotation. I don't think the wood perch is too bad, a natural perch of course would have been better.

For a good shot of a Kingfisher, I'd take them on any perch. Wonderful detail of this wet guy!!

Chris,

Fantastic image of this kingfisher, but the perch is less than ideal.

This is a difficult subject to shoot like any other kingfishers. You have done extremely well with exposure though, Chris!

I noticed you left some cloning marks around the subject that you might want to 'clean up' ...

Nice shot. The proportions of these guys make them adorable. Good job on a challenging exposure.

This looked to have been a very tough photo shot regarding exposure...nicely done.
