This shot is specially for Gloria who requested to see 'a bit more of life in the eye' in my last BFS post couple of days ago. Have I achieved the goal this time?

This was taken under a cloudy sky hence I can get away with less exposure compensation for the white ...

EOS-10D, EF600/4L + EF1.4x
Evaluative @ -1/3, ISO 400

If the creator had given me that nose, I really don't know about my self esteem. It looks like the bill on your version is much larger than our rosettes, but it's probably only the color. Very nice image.

Very nice KK. It think it could be brightened up a bit more. As for exposure comp, if this is full frame I would have been adding light...not subtracting. It still appears to be a little red like the last one. I can see good detail in the eye. A little fill might have made it even better. Thanks for sharing this great bird and hope you don't mind the honest input. :)

A great look at this beautiful bird up-close! The eye is very distinct here, nicely done! I'm for making it a touch lighter, and maybe a bit more room at the bottom. Minor nits, though, this is really nice!

You've already heard about fill flash....like I should be one to talk.
What an incredible closeup. Is the bill that large in relation to the rest of the bird or is it just the angle and perspective of the image? The detail of the bill is fascinating. Excellent.

Lana,

I learnt the hard way sometime ago. As much as I'd like to use flash more often in my bird photography, it's not always possible! Most birds are so skittish here in this part of the world and strobe flash is a good way to scare them off straight away especially in super closeup shooting like this one ...

The spoonbill is actully quite significant in relationship with the bird's body. Since the whole subject is almost on the same film plane it's not a illusion that you see.

What a cool looking bird! I really like the way you've captured the texture on the tip of the bill. I'd also like to see this just a little bit lighter but like it a lot as is!
