Some friends are doing a shorebird ID book using tons of photos. They told me that they need flight images of shorebirds, especially the peeps. I laughed, and said that that was just about impossible. They said,"They don't have to be artistic, mate, just show the bird in flight, even small in the frame." This juvie Semipalmated Sandpiper was photographed at the East Pond, Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, with the Canon EOS 1D and the 400mm f/5.6L lens, ISO 250, Evaluative Metering -1/2 stop: 1/1000 sec. at f/8. All comments welcome. BTW, this is cropped only a bit from the rear and the top.

Artie, looks like this one is a gimme, but you best submit it quickly :D , as they contacted Jimmy G. the shorebird in-iflight machine as well.

Best, and it was good to see you at Jamaica bay.

To be honest, after all of the impossible shots I've seen nothing surprises me any more.

Artie, another great one.

Pretty cool shot - love the way the tail is spread and the full wing spread and also the detail in the wing.

Just a reminder, the bird forum has gone to one post per 48 hours.

Wonderful display of the feather detail along the entire wing. And, of course, I agree with E.J. even if Greg did miss that fact.

Art -

Great feather spread and detail. Gorgeous plumage on this guy too.

No swan feathers in the BG either!

Sweetness on the wing!

Love the detail and the excellent opportunity shots like these give us to study the feather structure and field marks. Truly a keeper.
