(Sandhill Crane) Bosque de Apache, New Mexico

This is intended to be about a month long series of images from my two weeks at Bosque. My intent is to make the images flow as though they all occurred during a single day. Of course, they occurred during the two weeks I was there. :)

This is the fourteenth post of the series.

A crane pool morning can net you dozens of the typical flight images you see of Sandhill Cranes if you can keep the shadows at a minimum. Wing position is key here as well as picking a crane that won't get into the shadow of another crane.

In this image, I'm hoping that the shadow on the far wing doesn't detract too much. Am I right that it doesn't or is it a problem?

Tripod/Wimberly mounted Nikon D2H, 600mm AFS, TC-14EII ISO 200, Aperture Priority, 1/500 @ F8, SB-80DX, BB, FP. Cropped about 5% from the left and made panoramic by cropping the top.

Nice one. The BG is OOF just the right amount, the light's great, the SHC is well positoioned in the frame and the subject is sharp.

Anthony, In my opinion some people are getting way too hung up on shadows. They are completely natural and as long as they aren't both very large and totally without detail they add to the reality and depth of a photo. Nice shot.

Beautiful light Tony! The shadow does not bother me in the least. As with most of your recent crane images that you have been posting the only thing I wish for is some more room in the frame as I think you might have a tendency to shoot/crop a little too tight for my tastes (for flight shots anyway). Nicely done otherwise.

Excellent flight shot. My only nit is that it is a little tight. The shadow is a non-issue. :D

Tony,

I don't even mind the tight crop. The light, BG and sharp focus really make this one sing for me.

This is the one I like the best so far. I love the way the Crane really stands out. The wing and head position is great. BG is wonderful! Great image all around.

Hey Tony,

What Jim Zipp said, doubled! Shadow schmadow! :D

I also agree with Greg Downing .. a number of your flight shots are cropped tightly behind the bird (possibly to avoid centering the bird?), but I really think it often hurts the image .. it creates a cramped and static image rather than expressing the sense of freedom and flow that comes with a bird in flight.

Cheers

Carl

This image had plenty of room behind the bird but not much in front or under the bird, hence the crop. I hate to throw away a nice, sharp image simply because my panning skills need improving. :? I do admit that I like tight images so I'll try and watch how much I'm cropping in the future.
