Great Kiskadee South Texas
D1X, 600/4.

I shot this yesterday and got a lesson on digital handeling white exposure. I was shooting an Eastern Pheobe and had my exposure dialed in for a darker bird. The Kiskadee flew in near my setup stump and landed on this branch. I only had time to swing the camera around and grab two shots before he took off, not giving me time to dial back.

Removed one twig that went across his shoulder.

It's the camera. Everyone knows the D1X takes great pictures. That's why the other guys use Canon equipment. They want to work harder to get theirs.

As usual, Alan, it's a great bird and a very well done image. Looks like you figured out the techniques to tame hot whites pretty well.

Alan, I am prepared to give you full credit for your hard work and getting the hang of digital so fast. Tony is all wet. ;) You deserve all the credit!

I love this shot and understand the lesson. Another lesson is that, with digital, you can shoot most birds at the same exposure in the same light, as long as you expose for the whites right at the threshold (as bright as possible without blowing them). Everything else can be brought up later if you have a darker bird. At least this is true for good lighting situations, but less so for bright mid-day sun.

This is a great shot and I hope I can get something in April half this good.

Sweet shot of something I don't think I've seen before Alan. Nice pose and detail especially for a grab shot.. 8)

Lovely shot Alan. I love the little tilt of the head and the view of the whiskers.

Yep....I'd say you figured the lesson out just fine!!! A beautiful bird with a killer BG. Oh...ignore Tony....he'd get it right because he'd have 500 shots in under 2 minutes!!!
