Not my favorite image by a long shot, but I was surprised to get anything. The bird is wearing a leash that was substantial in relation to the bird. I thought the odds of the handlers ever managing to hide the leash behind a mullein stalk were negligible, but hide it they did, for about two rolls worth. EOS-3, 400 DO, 1.4x, 1/200, f8 (evaluative + 2/3), fill at -2/3 (CF 14.0), Velvia at 80 and pushed one stop. Full frame. Removed the annoying Beamer speck from the center of the eye.

Cliff, this is a real beauty. What a nice job getting the detail in the feathers.

The lighting and BG are special, too.

This one is really nice. The perch, BG, colors, and detail are excellent. Kestrels are such beauties.....but so hard to get close to.

Beautiful image. The warm colors of the BG work well with the nice lighting balance you achieved on the bird.

leash what leash -- we don't need no stinkin leashes
Captive or not this is just awesome. My favorite raptor so I've got to ask how you hook up with a trainer for a photo op such as this.

Brian,

This was made on the Joe Van Os raptor shoot, which I'm told has been imitated but never duplicated. The leader, Perry Conway, is both a photographer and a falconer, and he has many contacts among other falconers and university raptor centers. The trip is usually booked well in advance.
