(Sandhill Crane) Bosque de Apache, New Mexico

This is intended to be about a month long series of images from my two weeks at Bosque. My intent is to make the images flow as though they all occurred during a single day. Of course, they occurred during the two weeks I was there. :)

This is the thirteenth post of the series. The good news is that we are up to 7:20 AM after only a baker's dozen posts. :D

Most of the images you see from just after sunrise were taken at the crane pool. My last shot, taken at the farm deck, proves sometimes you simply have to take some chances. This one was taken from the Coyote Deck.

Chas wanted to vary where we were each morning so that we'd have a variety of images to work with. I had been shooting landscapes of a pool of water in the distance when this guy decided to fly by at just the right angle. It even brought a chunk of ice with it. I was considering flipping the image for display but I decided I'd show it the way I took it. I'm just happy that I was shooting at 400 ISO and that the shutter speed wasn't too slow. I think I would have rather been at F11 or F8 but you can't have everything.

I'm am happy about the open bill right at the right time though. 8)

Tripod/Wimberly mounted Nikon D2H, 600mm AFS, ISO 400, Aperture Priority, 1/250 @ F16. Cropped about 5%, from the bottom and right.

Hey Anthony, this looks like another fine image produced. Your quick on the draw ability paid off here. It appears you and the D2H have quite a relationship going  .

I am enjoying the series, keep'em coming and Happy Hoilidays!

Tony, the open beak and the wing movement really set this off.

I like the way you handled it.

Nice job, as usual.

Nice shot, love the sharpness in the face. To me the way the inside wing blurred is a little distracting. I know it’s just the result of the wing position and the slow shutter speed, but my eye has been drawn back to it a couple of times.

Lovely image -- tight in the frame that works well for me, particularly with the blur.

Nice capture with the open mouth and wing blur. My own preference would be for the sky to be a bit less cyan.

I love the open bill. The motion blur of the near wing is a little strange but still very nice. :)

If I ever get my D2H, I hope you will share with me the settings you use. Superb flight shot.
