Painted Bunting West Palm Beach, Florida

D1x, 600f4, 1.4x, iso 200, 1/125, f5.6 (0 EV), BB (-1.5), cropped from left, PS 7

I wish the background was as nice as the bird - next time I will bring a perch. Comments and critiques are welcome.

Jerry,

Beautiful bunting. I have nothing to add to your self critique.

Even with the busy background, the bird stands out fine. Better than anything I have of a Painted Bunting.

Nice shot Jerry. I'd be happy to have this one. I like the pose with the bird looking right at you. The BG isn't ideal, but the bird is beautiful and it stands out nicely. I think ISO 400 and F8 may have increased DOF enough to keep the tail in focus without sacrificing sharness.

Jim,

Thanks for the comments. I was hoping that by shooting wide open it would minimize the background. I think you are probably right though and a sharper bird would have improved the image.

Jerry, It's easy for me to comment after the fact. If I was in the same situation, I'm pretty sure I would have been shooting wide open as well. I don't know how well the D1x performs at ISO 400, but with my 10D I would definetly use ISO 400 in low light like this.

Nice shot of one of my favorite birds. Much better than anything I have so I have no nits with the BG.

I agree about the background, but at least the bird is facing into the least busy area--the image would be much less effective if the bird were facing left. You made the right decision to shoot at f5.6. Stopping down would make the background more noticeable without gaining much of anything with the bird.

I think Cliff has summed it up quite nicely. Now....I'd take any shot of a Painted Bunting that I could get. You did good with this one.
