What I would have given for a nice sky. I hate shooting with this sky! But it is a bird species I'm intrigued with and glad to capture. Any tips for making the best of wahsed out skies are welcome. canon 100-400 @ 400, IS 2 , handheld, EV plus 2/3, F5.6 on 10D

Jeff, Nice adult bird. Not much you can do about the sky that I know of for shots like this but for a winter bird like this it is less objectionable to me than say a redshoulder. Gives kind of a winter feeling to it. l I opened this in PS and used the highlight/shadow tool and pulled a lot of detail out of the dark area of the body and face without any problem too.

I agree with Jim; it's got a wintry feel to it; a blue sky and frontal sunlight aren't always required to make an effective photo. This one's got good action besides.

Excellent capture of this species that I have not seen before, Jeff!

To make the best out of this pale sky, I feel that this could well be utilised for a very good example of a high key presentation after some adjustments in PS ...

Jeff -

Looks good to me. I like shots in off light that give a sense of reality and mood to the image, as this does.

Nice position of the hawk including the tail tilt. I would like to see the repost with Jim's suggestions also. Your exposure looks right on and the underside is lit nicely, something that may or may not happen in bright blue sky light.

here's a repost with the dark area worked on per Jim. Thanks. I think it is better, although larger than the original.

The repost is very nice. I wouldn't hesitate to add a little catchlight either.
