Shot early this month was this Black-eared Kite at a nature reserve here in Hong Kong. Original was in horizontal but I think a vertical presentation works better here ...

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you all!!!

The vertical definitely works well here. A wonderful diagonal with him coming right at you!! Lovely earthtone colors as well. Excellent.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you as well.

You sure are getting some great pictures. This looks like a Black Kite. How do you tell the difference?

Awesome flight shot. The wing position and vertical framing combination work great here!!

The names Black Kite and Black-eared Kite refer to the same species known as Milvus lineatus.

Fantastic, especially the way he is using his tail to turn!

Oh. I was looking at MacKinnon & Phillipps, Birds of China, and saw both species, M. migrans and M. lineatus. From your note, I looked the bird up in Clements Birds of the World and saw only the Black Kite M.migrans. I assume that they must have been lumped.
Thanks :)

The taxonomy used by Clements traditionally lags behind that used by most of Eurasia. As far as I know, the two have not been lumped by anyone after having been split a few years ago. KK is right to refer to this as Black-eared Kite, but anyone is free to disagree.

Very nice shot BTW; dorsal shots of raptors are especially pleasing and harder to get.
