Pyrrhuloxia South Texas
D1X, 600/4.

One of my favorite desert species. This was also from my first digital shoot.

Alan,

Beautiful. It's amazing that the thorns never seem to injure them.

Happy Holidays

A very successful shoot it was. Great color and background here, as in the others. The bird is nice too, but lacks the red racing stripe up the breast that I've seen on other males. Any idea why? According to Sibley, first year birds should be in adult plumage by now. Is there a winter plumage?

A really really sweet shot -- these guys are one of my goals this year, maybe I'll see you in the Desert.

Cliff, you are right. I counted twelve Pyrrhuloxia where I was shooting. Three were male and the rest females. The males all had different stages of plumage, this one being the most vibrant. I did not see any that look like the ones I see in April. It may well be a seasonal thing.

The leg stretch is fascinating with the thorn tip appearing to be inside the belly feathers. Beautiful shot.

Alan,

Excellent shot. Love the perch and the pose with the raised crest.

Add another great image to your collection with this one. This one has an interesting perch.....almost looks like barbed wire wrapped with greenery. A beautiful image of a bird that I've never seen....nor can I spell it's name.

A little green and red for the holidays. I can see why you like this species.

Boy oh boy is this nice. The bird, background, and comp are top notch as usual. Those thorns look like they would hurt!
