Bald Eagle in flight (w/ tech ?)

10D, 500 IS, 1.4 II
ISO 200, 1/1000, f/7.1, local capture

I know this is not real sharp (too much PS work required). Is it due to poor focus, camera/lens movement or what? I don't know how to tell. Thanks in advance.

I'd go with poor focus. There can be motion blur at 1/1000 but you'd really have to be shaking the camera to get this much. Also, given the camera was on F7.1, you were significantly off with the focus.

Still, this is nicely framed and composed. It's a shame it's not as sharp as it could be.

It does look like its just a bit OOF. Otherwise this would have been an excellent shot.

I agree with Tony that the focus was off. Excellent image otherwise.
Be sure your focus is set to AI-Servo for moving subjects. :D

That's my guess too, that you were set to One shot AF. The tail looks better than the eye, so probably you pushed the shutter half way, acquired focus, and then the bird continued quartering toward you but the focus stayed where it was.
