Eastern Screech Owl Bensten State park, Rio-Grande Valley
Nikon F5, 600/4, 1.4X, Sensia 100.

While I was setting up the camera on the tripod to shoot this guy, a Mockingbird swooped down to mob the Owl, The Owl stretched up his head and neck to fill the hole. He closed his eyes and just blended into the tree. By the time I got ready to shoot, he was already back down to this position, I swear he was winking at me for that miss :)

A brilliant camouflage shot. I like the partially open eye. I think it gives a hint of life, a little character, a tiny bit of action maybe.

Alan,

This certainly fits the motif. Now all you need is for the mockingbird to return and for the owl to fill the entire hole.

Nice shot! Sure looks like it would have been easy to walk right past this owl and never even know it was there.

Alan,

Very nice shot. This owl certainly has feathers that look like bark.

This is so amazing...how do they know? I mean when was the last time you saw an owl with a hand mirror? :) Great shot, Alan - and I am certain he was winking for the miss. If I've learned anything so far it's that birds taunt - oh yes they do. :)

Great camo shot. These birds are some of the best at cryptic coloration.

He certainly does blend in - good job finding him in the first place. Too bad about the missed opportunity.
