Bald Eagle
Squaw Creek, NWR

Every few years the right conditions come together and freeze Snow geese in the ice. With an ample supply of food in the freezer, the eagles arrive in numbers. With over 300 eagles and a dwindling supply of geese, hunger draws them closer to the road. This is by far the closet I've been able to get to an eagle at Squaw Creek.

Hey Chris,

I'm amazed that the geese get caught in the freezing water. I hadn't heard of that before. Crazy stuff!

I like the light here. I'd probably crop a bit from the RHS.

Cheers

I've never heard of geese (or any critter) being frozen in ice. Thanks for the natural history lesson. The straight on stare is cool.

An excellent image.....and an incredible image. Are there really that many snow geese that get frozen in the ice? This is amazing.

Very nice! Great light. Cropping a little off the right would make the composition even better.

Boy that's a good question...I would venture to say hundreds. There were between 300-400k snow geese at the refuge in late November when it started to freeze. With that many birds there's bound to be a lot of injuried birds that aren't able to free themselves from the ice or die during the night.

I would have loved to be there when it started to freeze, I'm kicking myself for not going up there right when I got back from Bosque :( .
