Horned Puffin, St. Paul Island, The Pribilofs, AK

I believe I haven’t posted this before, but some may have seen it in a slide show recently. Here it has been cropped a little for web presentation. The original shows more of the black lava background, which I really like in this image. I was actually avoiding these sorts of backgrounds because I thought the bird would get lost in the rocks. I couldn’t have been more wrong!

As usual, comments and critiques welcomed!

EOS 1D, EF 300/4 IS, 1/800 @ f4, ISO 250, HS flash at -1 with beamer.

The puffin POPS off of that background. I remember it from the slideshow, I loved it then and I still love it now!!

Incredible flight image, Greg! You are right, the background is perfect to balance off the black plumage. Superb in every respect!

Greg,

Superb, If this were full screen in a dark room , one would swear he would be flying right off the screen.

Great shot. The blackest portions of the lava form a nice pattern directly behind the head and wings.

Greg, this is fantastic. Love the BG and the way the bird does stand out against it.

Smokin shot. Toning down the brightest rocks below right of bird would put this right off the scale.

I would have never thought shooting this guy against that BG would have given such an outstanding image. Jim is right....in a dark room this guy would seem to fly off the screen.
