Title: NORTHERN FULMAR - BERING SEA.
Species: Northern Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis)
Photographer: James McIntyre
Date: August, 2000
Location: St. Paul, Pribilof Islands, AK
Equipment: Canon EOS-1VHS; EF 100-400 mm f/4-5.6L IS USM + 1.4x I TE, handheld
Evaluative Metering: 0
Film: Fuji Provia 100F
Scanner: Nikon Super Coolscan 4000 ED with LaserSoft SilverFast Ai Software v6.0.1r28 (IT8 calibrated)

Thanks to the many of you who commented so favorably on this picture.

AM, EJP and JU were concerned about the 'graininess', so I redid the picture with a different PS workflow that seems to remove most of the problems. The before and after versions are shown above for comparison. This picture could still be tweaked a little to lower the contrast and sharpness a bit, but I thought I would display the initial result of this new method here. I am convinced that AM and EJ scan the internet with a loupe permanently fixed over one eye.

Not to worry, HF. I'm not going to repost ALL my previous pictures, just ...

For those of you who may not have seen my initial post on 12/18, it includes a short writeup about the natural history of 'tubenoses' and where the picture was taken.

Comments, questions and suggestions welcome.

FILM LIVES!

To tell the truth I see little difference (maybe it’s still too early). The head turn it brilliant.

It's funny but I see little difference between the two posted here but I know there's a definite difference from the original one that was posted as I noticed the grain right away but I don't here.

Hey...I still like this shot no matter what version it is.

Yikes, I'm losin' it! All of you sharp-eyed people are right; I uploaded the wrong file. The one on top was just a slightly sharper version of the one below and didn't have a couple of other small corrections. But both were made my new way.

So I've yanked the top one and replaced it with the REAL original, where the grain is evident.

Y'all are eligible for NSN's LOUPE OF THE MONTH AWARD. :)

You did a good job on the repost. The image was worth it although the original noise wasn't that bad. :)
