There are a number of things wrong with this image. The whites are too hot and I should have been in the ocean or to my right when I took this, but this is the kind of image I'd like to improve on when I go back. A lower shooting angle would have helped but the risk is getting saltwater on your equipment.

This was taken on Deception Island. We landed at this beach area where they were actively leaving as well as entering the water in droves. No where else did I see this type of mass activity on a beach, but it surely must occur.

EOS3, 28-135IS, some crop from the top. Provia F 100.

Comments and reposts welcome.

Jim,

Aside from the nits you mentioned, I think this is very nice. I love the line-up of penguins and especially the one that's just about to take the plunge. :)

In spite of your lamentations I wish it was mine!!!, A lower angle could have given you the horizon, but very nice as is!!!
Congrats!! 8)

Good shot. I don't think you can give this any less exposure, and the whites look as good as they can. Spot meterers like John Shaw and Rod Planck would probably call for +2 from white, given all the blacks here, and I'd guess that's about what you have. Composition and the surf are very nice. Bailey Head?

We saw huge masses of birds hesititating to enter, then all moving at once, like shorebirds in flight. I think it's the risk posed by Leopard Seals, versus no risk on shore. We watched a 12-foot long Leopard take one seal every 45 minutes or so for a full afternoon; they are awesome predators, known to puncture Zodiacs. Shortly after our trip, a Leopard killed a British biologist who was doing an underwater grid survey.

Cliff,

Yes, this was at Bailey's Head. Yes, the leopard seals are a ferocious predator. We saw them repeatedly take a penguin at Gourdin Island and ferociously tear them apart. The smaller petrels would fly in to salvage some scraps from the water when ever this occurred and they would serve just like vultures do elsewhere to help spot where this predation was occurring.

This one is really good....certainly no nits at all. You did a great job with this one......and the action is excellent. Now...if I could just figure out how to get out of school for a couple of weeks mid year I'd be there.

Very humorous. The others are waiting to see what will happen to the leader before committing!

You have already critiqued the image so I'll just say how much I like the activity. Talk about lemmings.
