Black-legged Kittiwake and Chick, St. Paul Island, AK

I had not looked closely at this series until now and never realized I captured this moment. This was taken with stacked converters and manually focused. There was no flash used, and the catch light was added in processing. The detail in the file resulted in a JPEG with a high compression ratio, so the image quality might leave something to be desired. I did the best I could with the file size, but the original is sharper than I expected, given such extreme conditions. If I could have blasted the foreground rock out of there I would have. Moving right any more would have also required me to move down….about 100 feet. ;)

Comments welcomed!

This certainly doesn't look like your typical post but I absolutly love this image. While I really wish the oof rock wasn't there- I kind of like the way it helps convey the feeling of looking in on this intimate behavior. The parent looks so protective and nurturing and of course, the chick is adorable. This is really sweet Greg. I love the way the birds seem completely oblivious to your presence.

Wonderful, Greg !!! I adore seeing this intimate interaction and, but of course, love the chick !!! Had to look more than once to spot the rock. Thanks for sharing!!

Greg,

This is absolutely wonderful. I love the intimacy between parent and chick. To me the rock is a non-issue. I don't know if I'm having a 'purist' moment or what but I wonder what this looks like w/o the added catch light. :?

Exceptional as per your usual. :D

A wonderful interaction is shown here and you did a great job with the stacked converters (something that has yet to yield me a good image). Funny that you mention the rock......I actually didn't notice it and after reading your information had a second look to find it. I think that shows you how strong the image really is.

Great stuff Greg. This is nature photography at its most intimate. To capture this without stressing the birds and let nature do its thing is what it's all about.

I forgot about this too and have a couple of cute shots. Sometimes it pays to go back. Very nice!

Wonderful interaction with parent & chick. Surprising clarity for ISO 400 and stacked converters.
