A bird of which I previously had no images. When I first saw him, he was sidelit but I figured I better get some shots before trying to position myself better for the light. He flapped his wings in different positions for almost 10 different images.
When I finally was able to move so that the light was more frontal, he just perched and then flew.

Wow, I've never seen one of these. Good thing you got the shot before repositioning. Very cool!

I have never seen one of these either, great capture with its wings raised.

More redeye! Beautifully positioned wings and a good job on exposure to show the eye without cooking the breast.

Richard, great shot. Love the raised wings. I'm seeing a halo all around the bird and perch?

Richard,
I HAVE seen quite a few of these guys but have never gotten any this nice. Great shot. I too am seeing the halo and it looks like what I get using the shadow/highlight tool a little too strongly. Play around with the sliders a little and you can get rid of it easily.

Nice shot Richard. I've seen them hovering above golf courses down here but never perched.

Great composition!! The wing position is what makes this one for me.

A bird I have been lusting after for a long time, I have seen quite a few but never have had the chance to photograph, When it hovers it's like an Angel in the air, I will surely try this year for sure come what may!!!
Congrats!!!, A little contrast mask could make sing, so here it is!!!
If you don't like it I can always delete the image!!!
This was done quick and dirty!!
Killer capture!! 8) 8) 8)

Nice image! I like the sidelighting, it gives more of a 3-dimensional look than frontlighting and with a white bird like this you don't have a dark side with no detail. Very, very nice. Thanks for sharing.

Guess what? White-tailed Kites do have red eyes!!
Fantastic image, Richard !!! Maybe he kept flapping because of the pointy perch ...

Love it -- the repost with the contrast mask does a good jon to diffuse the shadow.

Wow. Great shot of my favorite California raptor. I find a few of these guys perched in the field outside my mom's place every time I visit yet they always fly off as soon as the camera comes out. This is really excellent IMO.

Richard,

Lovely capture. Wonderful wing spread. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he stays around for a few weeks.
