I have hesitated to post pictures from Bosque as there have been so many great images over the last few weeks. I have come back to this one several times as I like the detail. I had wondered what was on the leg and didn't have it figured out until Alan Melle posted his shot with an explanation of the ice ring. This one was shot on my last morning early at the crane pool.

I cropped this one several ways and decided that by making it a pano I could keep more of the detail at the larger size but am unsure if it is right.

Canon 1D, 500mmL IS, 1.4X TC, tripod
ISO 200, f/8, ss 1/1600 (EV +1 in RAW conversion)
Photoshop - cropped about 25%, USM, levels, etc.

This is a neat shot.

You did very well and there shouldn't be any reason to hesitate to post it. The pano crop is good, too.

Beautiful detail, Lana. Your next mission is to get a bird with ice rings on both legs and around the neck.

Way to go, Lana! I figured with all the photographers there someone else had to have gotten a SHC showing ice on a leg. Nice shot!

See, Alan, I knew it was that digital camera making your photos. The eye is quite clear here, and getting the eye of a big bird in a JPEG isn't always easy.

I'm not usually fond of odd crops, but the bird here is fantastic--great light, great posture--in my book, one of the stronger images from this year's Bosque crop.

After seeing Alan ice ring shot I checke my images more closely and sure enough found a few of my own. Your ice ring is a little different. This Crane was in pretty deep :D The image is very powerful and I like the crop.

I got a number of images with small bits of ice on their legs. The original one shown, had a pretty large piece attached and I haven't seen one of mine with a piece that large.

Lana, nice approach shot. It's generally tough to do approach shots like this because of the shadowing. It's also hard to show the whole Sandhill crane wing span in an image this large since the eye is such a small part of the image due to the size of the bird and the angle of the eye. This must look great full size because it looks very good at this size.
