Nanaimo, BC, Can, today

D100 500/4 1.4x 1/320s f/8 iso 200
15% crop

I waited for over an hour for this duck to work its way into the reflections in the ocean, about 50 feet from where I had set up my tripod. I did not trust the meter reading so I used sunny f/16 with a +1.7EV (winter coastal BC adjustment), which works almost all the time.

I would appreciate a confirmation on the id - my wife thinks it is a Bufflehead, but our books show Buffleheads as being grey, not brown.
Regards
Rory

Cute bird and the water is fantastic. This looks like a female bufflehead to me.

A beauty, Rory. Psychedelic water. I'd prefer it slightly larger in the frame.

Rory,

Fantastic water with neat blue wake. Now if you can entice her a little closer.

Rory, Wives are usually correct!! Gorgeous female Bufflehead in absolutely gorgeous water!!! I'd crop a smidge from the bottom, but leave the blue oval in LR. How they get larger ducks is beyond me, my friend !!!

Hi Jill - according to my wife, she is always right! You should have seen the smirk when I passed on the id to her from this forum.

And....should it be any other way?

You have a very nice female Bufflehead for sure with water that is incredible. They are definitely skittish birds but full of personality and worth a long wait to get the right image. You did a very nice job with this little lady.

Excellent shot, Rory.

How do we get them bigger in the frame, you ask?
Wait, wait, wait.

Great water, the bird is just a bit overexposed. Your wife was right, Bufflehead. They are not easy to get close to, nice image.
