American Wigeon, New Mexico

I picked out another close-up from my wigeon shoot-out. I did a linear overlay on this one, but only on the shoulder patch.

Comments and critiques welcomed.

Excellent shot, Greg. I like the pose. I just got some shots of a Chiloe Wigeon (a South American cousin) at Crandon Park.

Sweet!!! I love the detail in the water drops on his bill. That usually doesn't show at web posting size. Gotta love that preening pose. :D

Oh boy, this is a lovely composition. I like these preening shots. The yin-yan symbol on its head is cool too. I was shooting a pair of AW at Santee Lakes yesterday afternoon. It's going to be a great year for duck photography.

Very nice. Is this before or after you tried to go swimming with your gear?

Interesting composition - one that I like very much. A very pretty specimen too.

Greg,

Love the pose of his head and the water drops, but I 'd favor a crop to a vertical. There's so much of the body showing but not the whole body and I think it detracts from the best portion of your image.
Enjoy viewing

This is gorgeous.....especially the pose. I have always heard of linear conversions but have never tried one. Is there an article somewhere that tells how to do it?

Lana, as far as doing a linear conversion on it's own, it as simple as a regular conversion. You just need to choose "linear" in you conversion program. I did write a short article on combining them here:

http://www.naturescapes.net/092003/gd0903.htm

The steps I took for this image were the same as the article, except everything was done in 16 bit mode, since PS CS now allows it. In this shot I selected the white area on the side of the bird, inversed the selection, and history brushed the remainder of the image back out because I didn't need the linear overlay on those areas.

What a little sweetie. These are the cutest little ducks. I really like the deep green patch in this one.
