Title: NORTHERN FULMAR - BERING SEA
Species: Northern Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis)
Photographer: James McIntyre
Date: August, 2000
Location: St. Paul, Pribilof Islands, AK
Equipment: Canon EOS-1VHS; EF 100-400 mm f/4-5.6L IS USM + 1.4x I TE, handheld
Evaluative Metering: 0
Film: Fuji Provia 100F
Scanner: Nikon Super Coolscan 4000 ED with LaserSoft SilverFast Ai Software v6.0.1r28 (IT8 calibrated)

Seabirds such as albatrosses, petrels and fulmars spend most of their lives on the open ocean. These "tubenoses" drink salt water freely but must excrete excess salt to avoid overloading their kidneys and renal system. The excess sodium is carried in the blood stream to a nasal gland in their prominent nostril tubes, where it is concentrated and discharged.

This photo was taken one evening at "High Bluffs" on the western coast of St. Paul Island in the Pribilofs. The winds had shifted to onshore and the Kittiwakes and Fulmars were riding the updrafts, hovering almost motionless at the edge of the cliffs. Even the stubby-winged Puffins were enjoying the free ride.

Northern Fulmars have two color phases - light and dark. This bird may be an intermediate morph. They glide over the sea on their long, narrow wings with a stiff-winged beat, bills held downward at a 45-degree angle to search for food.

Very nice John. On a good wind day the high bluffs are where the action is. This is a nice shot and good framing. The contrast is inevitable with this bird and situation.

Alan:

Ah, you guys with your fancy, grainless digital cameras! Can you even remember FILM? This was shot in 2000. I'm not even sure Canon had a digital camera out then. Noone in our group had one.

You are right about the grain though. This was shot with Fuji Provia 100F at ISO 320 and pushed 2x. As I recall the light was not very good. I had to apply a GB=6 to the sea and take out some of the excess grain on the head of the NF with a layer mask after sharpening.

Glad you liked this 'historic' shot. :D

These were among my favorites when I went to the Pribs. An excellent image - I would try to smooth out a little bit of the grain

I explained above what I did to smooth the grain in the sea. The bird needs some sharpening. I might try with Sharpen Edges in PS to see what happens - I've never used that before. This picture was sharpened with Nik Sharpener Pro and if I back off a bit with the opacity control, the enhanced grain is reduced without losing very much sharpness.

James,

Wonderful capture. Love the diagonal orientation and head turn. You already have heard about grain.
