great shot KK, well caught. Seems a little flat ? Maybe a curves tweak will give it some punch.

Love the open beak and the look he's giving you. Would pop more with a bit of curves (lightening) and a little more USM.

Nice behavioral type portrait. I agree with Rich's comments, it seems a bit dark on my monitor.

Nice open bill. I think a vertical would also be a nice option and accentuate the long neck. The background is quite wonderful with the gray tones I'm seeing.

I agree with Rich here. It needs a bit of snap for presentation. I like the nice simple composition though.

Excellent timing! They always seem to this when I have my eye away from the viewfinder. Very Nice! :D

I like the open bill and the composition looks OK to me.

KK, I don't understand your choice of exposure here - you have a white subject on a light grayish background in overcast conditions and you chose a -1 compensation. The proper exposure for this would be in the +2/3 to +1 regime so I am thinking this was very dark and you used post processing to bring the exposure back up thereby losing detail in the darker areas of the image. It also would look better with a little more sharpening

EJ, Thanks for picking up this point. Yes, I'd have indeed used the compensation value of +2/3 if I had used slide for the shot.

If I remember correctly, it was a bright overcast afternoon and because I want to prevent any burnt out effect of the white with my 10D hence I dailed in a -1 instead. The actual exposure was 1/1600s @ f/5.6 as recorded. The RAW image looks okay and so is the histrogram! My experience tells me to apply exposure compensation for between - 2/3 and -1 1/3 when shooting anything total white, such as the Great Egret, with my 10D! :?

With digital, I found myself contantly have to compensate for more even though I'm using my incident light meter reading as my base reference. I don't have this 'problem' with slide films.
