August 2002 was the first August in 26 years that I did not make it to the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. It is good to be back in the mud again at my soul place! This moderately worn juvenile Semipalmated Plover was photographed at the northwest corner of the pond as we were laying in thick, black, smelly ooze. Canon EOS 1Ds, 500mm f/4 L IS lens with 2XII TC. ISO: 250, Evaluative Metering at zero: 1/800 sec. at f/8. All comments welcome. Best, Artie

Hey Artie,

Besides being a great photo all round, it is the attitude that puts it over the top.

It's a beauty, though slightly tilted ;) Where are the virtual legs/feet? :P

Seriously, I really missed you guys up there but we were down here holding down the fort. Glad you had a successful weekend!

Splendid image! Never having been to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, I'm wondering what the "thick, black, smelly ooze" consists of ... :?:

Thanks, Greg. It sounds like a major cleanup is needed there, most especially due to the jet fuel and dead fish. It's what I expected.

Love the shot and the implied attitude - but where's a little dude like this get such an attitude? ;)

Hey Artie,
These juve semi-palms are one of my favorites and this one is a beauty! It was good to see you and get back into the ooze too!

WOW, super smooth shot. Love the high lights from the ripples on the birds breast.

Nothing to criticize here! The bird and background are both spectacular!
