This is a barred owl family (mother and three babies) from my back yard. The father was nearby but I could not get him in the photo. The pair has nested in my back yard for the past four year but each year before last they had only two young.

Technical: Nikon F4 with 600 F4 manual focus lens plus 1.4X converter. Did not document aperture or shutter speed. Levels adjusted in Photoshop and some bright spots cloned out in the background.

Love the four little fuzzballs. A little bit of sharpening and a reduction in the blue cast caused by shooting in shade would really spruce this one up.

Were they watching "Winged Migration" in IMAX ?
Father must have brought the biggest rat available for them to be so intent and somewhat hypnotized looking at Dad!!
About the right exposure and fill-flash could have helped as well, a tad soft , more than likely the victim from a slow SS, Still very nice!!!
Congrats!!

Bill, A delightful composition of an adorable family!! I love how they're all looking the same direction. What a great joy to have them as yard birds!! Keep them coming please.

Bill, What a cool opportunity to have these fuzzballs out in the open like this. I like the S curved branch and the BG is good. I too want to see them look this way.

How funny with all of them so intently looking the same direction! I love the comp and the curve of the branch- really great opportunity. Others have mentioned the technical suggestions so I won't repeat them.

Precious shot! Film scans aren't always easy to work with and you have some good advice here on how to take it to the next level. Wonderful catch with all these birds out on the limb. :)

I'd really like to know what they're looking at ;). Removing the slight blue cast and a touch of USM would lift this image nicely. Welcome to NSN.

Thanks for all the great comments. I am a novice with scanning and Photoshop so all of the comments on how to improve the image are really appreciated. I spent about an hour taking different shots and don't have a single one where they are all looking at me. Bummer!

EJ's points are well taken, but still a solid shot.
