The difficulty was finding a group of cranes with some separation between them that were also standing in an area of color. This was as good as I could find over a three night period. Trying to create a different type of image at Bosque is a great challenge.

It's a pretty image nonetheless.

Wonderful silhouette. The colors are excellent. I really like the pattern/texture of the water. You got the SHCs sharp too. I agree with Alex about less reflection and more on top. I would still like to have this in my files though.

It was very nice meeting you Saturday night. :)

This is nice work, Neil. It definitely sounds like you thought of a good concept for a unique shot, and put in the effort to get it. I personally like that you included the reflection, but also think this would look good cropped to panoramic.

Love the colors and agree on the challenge of seperation -- you've got a good one here.

Neil:

I don't know how much manipulation you like to do in PS. I just shoot for my own amusement, so I don't mind doing things to images that I wouldn't do if I were trying to market them.

Anyway, with that in mind, I took this image and:

Cropped off the two overlapping birds on the right.
Added more room at the top.
Lightened the water near the top to better separate the crane heads.
Cloned the head from the bird on the left onto the two "headless" birds, so now they are all looking left.
Cropped the whole to a boxy vertical.

I can post it or email it to you if you are at all interested.

Nice photo Neil, I think its a little tight on top and bottom. The two merging birds on the right might be better PS into one bird.

Hi Neil,
I love it just the way it is. I would not change a single thing.

I think this has all sorts of possibilities with the suggestions made. Still...it's a nice silhouette. I never could get them separated....you came a lot closer than I did. Good work.

I personally like it as is. The merged birds are not ideal but it's still very nice IMHO. It was good to meet you and hope you enjoyed your time at the Bosque.

This is a great shot. The colours are gorgeous and you're to be congratulated on thinking of something different. Well done.

Very nice! I enjoyed meeting you and shooting together at the Crane Pool. It really was tough to get good separation of the birds there but this works for me. Nice job.
