Bald Eagle bringing Spanish Moss to nest

D1x, 600f4 iso 200 1/640 f9 USM about 15-20% crop

I debated about how much and where to crop. I cropped a little from each side so that the eagle's talons were in the exact center of the image. This seemed to balance the bird on one side and the nest on the other. I would be interested in how you would go about cropping this image.

Jerry,

I like this very much. The Eagle and nest balance this very nicely. Nice capture.

I think you've got the best crop here. Any other crop and it's always going to be unbalanced.
Nice shot by the way :)

Jerry,

Wonderful shot. It might make a great vertical too.

Jerry,

The balance as presented works for me. I can also see it as a vertical. A lot of possibilities with this one.

Very nice!!

Jerry:

I woud leave the crop like this and let the art director at the magazine make the final decision.

I really like this -- I think the composition works well here to show the habitat of the eagle. Excellent exposure to boot.

Nice nest building activity, I would rent scaffolding and set it far enough from the nest, The opportunity is golden , but wait for the eggs to be laid!!!
Congrats!! 8)

Jerry, I think you've cropped this very well, not just for where the eagle and nest are, but for how the branches coming in from the edges focus your eye towards the middle of the frame. It looks like the eagle has chosen a really tight flight path to enter the nest through the branches.

I *love* the view of the nest. I think this is an excellent environmental shot! I like the crop as is. :)

I am not sure how narrowly you would have cropped this. I have tended to avoid vertical pano cropping in the past but I really like the different effect this cropping produces with this image. The implied direction of action along with some of the vertical elements in the branches and nest make this work for me. I used a 2:1 height:width ratio here - I was not sure if there are magical proportions you should use or whether you just "eyeballed" it. Thanks for all the suggestions.
