Because the sky wasn't very interesting on the day I took this shot, I spent the morning trying to keep it out of the composition. However, when this pelican flew in and landed right behind me, I couldn't help but to take a few shots.

The pose and angle of view is very nice. The gray sky doesn't bother me because of the colors of the pelican. f5.6 might have gotten the tip of the bill a little sharper but still, this is nice as is. :)

Very nice composition. To give this image more punch, underexposing it by about 1 stop and then adding flash would somewhat darken the sky and brighten up the bird.

Scott, I like the high key effect of the light background and think there's enough texture there to work well in this shot. I also like your composition and low angle of view, but the shot could benefit from less shutter speed and more DOF.

On top of what's already been said, I really like your choice of composition here.
